Hiram Softball Falls to No. 10 Berry, Faces Elimination against DePauw on Sunday

Box Score GREENCASTLE, Ind. - May 14, 2022Hiram softball fell to the 10th-ranked Berry College Vikings, 10-0 on Saturday at DePauw Tigers Field, dropping their opening game of the winner's bracket at the DePauw Regional. With the loss, the Terriers will face host DePauw University in an elimination game on Sunday, May 15, with the winner advancing to the regional championship game against Berry.
 
GAME 1: #10 BERRY 10, HIRAM 0
Anna Jackson got the scoring started quickly for the Vikings, launching a two-out home run to center to give Berry a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
 
Jeskari Rodriguez would strand a pair in the second inning, but after Hiram left a runner on second in the bottom of the frame, the Vikings added to their lead in the top of the third.
 
Riley Jackson drew a one-out walk, and a batter later, Morgan Frye added two more runs to Berry's tally with a two-run homer to right-center.
 
The 10th-ranked Vikings added another run in the fourth on Katie White's fielder's choice, before Darian Kanno, who relieved Rodriguez midway through the inning, settled things down over the next few frames.
 
However, Berry would pull away with a six-run top of the seventh to extend their lead to 10-0 before Hannah Gore worked around a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh to finish off the victory for the Vikings.
 
Gore (15-1) earned the win for Berry, while Rodriguez (10-7) took the loss for Hiram, allowing four runs, three earned, on four hits over 3.1 innings pitched.
 
Angel Santellan tallied two hits to lead Hiram at the plate, going 2-for-3, while Abriana Schwartz went 1-for-3.
 
With the loss, Hiram dropped to 25-15 on the year and will face No. 8 DePauw, the winner of Game 4, in an elimination game on Sunday, May 15, with the winner securing the second spot in Sunday's Regional Championship Game against Berry.
 
The first pitch of the elimination game, which was originally scheduled for Saturday, May 14 but was postponed due to inclement weather, will be determined early Sunday morning.
