ALBION, Michigan - November 20, 2022 - Hiram had a number of wrestlers pick up wins on Sunday at the Albion Invitational, with the team scoring 26.5 points and finishing 12th out of 16 teams.
Alex Savering led the way with a 2nd-place finish in the 141-lb bracket (14.0 team points), while Devan Welch was 7th at 285 lbs (8.5 pts) and Seth Holt was 8th at 165 lbs (2.5 pts). The team improved from its performance at the event last season, as it finished 11th out of 12 teams exactly one year ago.
Savering won each of his first three matches, beating Augustana's Mikey Rodriguez (Decision 8-7), Otterbein's Joey Buckland (Decision 13-7) and Muskingum's Tanner Donathan (Decision 12-9). The junior lost in the 1st place match to Davenport's Tyson Emmons (Fall 1:57).Â
Welch had one of his best performances of the season, winning by fall over Cleary's John Keers (4:11) and eventually winning all four matches in the consolation bracket: by fall over Mott Community College's Mike Nelson (1:49), by decision over Southwestern Michigan's Cole Aslup (7-3), by fall over Otterbein's Zac Stray (2:42) and by decision over Rochester's Paul Nadeau (4-3).
Holt had a similar level of success, winning 4 total matches on the day before losing the consolation final. He beat Davenport's Jahleel Rollins by decision (11-8), Ohio Wesleyan's Christian Tesnow by decision (6-5), East Stroudsburg's Justin Halbert by decision (12-7) and East Stroudsburg's Sergio Cespedes by decision (4-3).
Jimmy Thomas also picked up a win at 174 lbs, winning by major decision over Ohio Wesleyan's Brady Walsh (10-1).
Ian Fuentes (125 lbs), Corey Casterline (133), Will Brodbeck (141), Kaelon Lawson-West (157), Zach Harper (197) and Nick Maule (285) also logged a number of quality matches to finish the weekend.
Hiram continues working through its schedule with the Ohio Northern Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 3 at 9 a.m. in Ada, Ohio.
