WASHINGTON, Pennsylvania - November 12, 2022 - Hiram finished in 10th place at the Washington and Jefferson Invitational on Saturday, with Corey Casterline (133 lbs), Will Brodbeck (141), Alex Savering (141), Jimmy Thomas (174) and Devan Welch (285) all picking up at least one win on the day. It was the second time the team participated at the event after finishing in 11th place last season.
Casterline beat UMBC's Mac Luu with a pin in 3:31 as part of the consolation bracket for the 133-lb class. He finished the day with a 2-2 record, losing to the eventual 5th-place finisher in the bracket.
Brodbeck picked up his win over Washington and Jefferson's Anthony Romasco, 11-6 by sudden victory. He would lose in the next round to Lycoming's Wiley Kahler, who ended up finishing in 2nd place at the 141-lb class.
Also in the 141-lb bracket was Alex Savering; the junior finished in 5th place, notably beating Muskingum's Tanner Donathan twice. Savering's 4 wins on the day led the team.
Jimmy Thomas wasn't too far behind his teammate in the 174-lb bracket, winning against Penn State Behrend's Justin Cornelius (13-10) and Southern Virginia's Loyal Holm (7-5). The two wins were his first wins of the season.
Devan Welch capped off the day with a 4th-place finish in the 285-lb bracket. He earned victories over Gettysburg's Simon Taylor (3-2) and Southern Virginia's Porter Trapp (Pin, 1:44).Â
A quick turnaround is in store for the Terriers, as they head to Greenville, PA to take on Thiel College on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
