CLEVELAND, Ohio - April 19, 2021 – For the second time this season, Hiram softball freshman
Abriana Schwartz was named the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Softball Player of the Week, for the week of April 12 - April 18, as announced by the conference on Monday.
Over four games, Schwartz batted .714/.733/1.286, helping the Terriers clinch a spot in the NCAC Championship series with four wins over Allegheny College. In total, Schwartz went 10-for-14 with two doubles, two home runs, one walk, eight runs scored and four RBI, adding one stolen base.
"This is a huge honor, not only for Abriana but for Terrier Softball as well," Head Softball Coach
Scott Pohlman said. "Not since 2013 has a Terrier earned NCAC Player of the Week twice in one season."
"Abriana came out swinging this past week, in part due to her additional work outside of practice time," Pohlman said. "I look forward to seeing what Abriana achieves not only on the field but also in the classroom, both the rest of this season and over the next three years."
At home against the Gators on Thursday, March 15, Schwartz helped the Terriers break a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth, putting herself in scoring position with a two-out double before coming around to score on an error to give Hiram a lead it'd never relinquish.
And on Saturday in Meadville, Pa., Schwartz helped power the Terriers to a series sweep, going 4-for-4 with a double, home run, three runs scored and two RBI in a 9-0 game-one victory, before going 3-for-3 with a homer, walk, two runs scored and two RBI in Hiram's 8-5 victory in game two.
Schwartz earned NCAC Softball Player of the Week honors for the second time this season, with her first honor coming on April 5. Schwartz is the first Terrier in program history to earn NCAC Athlete of the Week honors twice in one season since Jessica Bolanz in 2013.
For the season, Schwartz leads the Terriers, hitting .417/.474/.667 with 10 doubles, a triple, three home runs, 28 runs scored and 19 RBI.
The Terriers are back in action on Thursday, April 22 when they travel to Oberlin, Ohio for a doubleheader against the Yeowomen beginning at 3:30 p.m.
