Hiram Softball Drops Doubleheader at Maryville to Open Road Trip

MARYVILLE, Tenn. - March 7, 2020 – Hiram Terriers softball fell twice to the Maryville College Scots, 9-6 and 7-6, on Saturday to open their six-game road trip. With the losses, Hiram falls to 1-5 on the year, while the Scots move to 7-1.

GAME 1: Maryville 9, Hiram 6
The Scots struck first in the bottom of the first inning. Christina White drew a leadoff walk, and Courtney Deck followed with an infield single to put two on with nobody out. A groundout to second put runners on second and third for Taylor Campbell, who smacked a two-run triple to left-center, giving Maryville a 2-0 lead. Reid Ballard followed with an RBI single, giving the Scots a 3-0 lead after one.

The Terriers though, answered with five runs in the top of the second. Avery Balurdi reached on a hit-by-pitch and Kylie Perez reached on an error to bring Melissa Galindo to the plate with one out. Galindo brought Balurdi home with an RBI single, and Giselle Chavez followed with a single of her own to load the bases.

Kaitlyn Hager drew another hit-by-pitch to cut the Scots' lead to 3-2 before Victoria Garcia tied things up with an RBI groundout. Giselle Bahena then gave the Terriers a 4-2 lead with an RBI single to third, before Megan Davis made it a 5-2 lead with an RBI single down the left-field line.

Bailey Scheck worked around a two-out single to keep the Scots off the scoreboard in the bottom of the second. But after Hiram went in order in the third, Maryville took the lead in the bottom of the frame.

Campbell led off the bottom of the third with a double and move to third on Ballard's groundout to short. A walk and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases, and then a wild pitch scored Bailey Ensley, who pinch ran for Campell from third, to cut Hiram's lead to 5-3. Ashton Hayden then reached on a throwing error, scoring a pair of unearned runs to give Maryville a 6-5 lead.

Hiram tied things up on Victoria Garcia's RBI double in the top of the fourth, scoring Chavez from third, but the Scots came right back to take the lead in the bottom of the inning.

With two on and two out, Allison Botts stroked a single through the left side, scoring Campbell to give Maryville a 7-6 lead.

Maryville added two more runs on Deck's two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth, while the Hannah Bruce stranded Terriers in the top of the sixth and seventh to finish off the 9-6 Maryville victory.

Scheck (1-2) took the loss for the Terriers, allowing nine runs, six earned, on 10 hits, walking five and striking out three. Bruce (4-0) earned the win for the Scots.

Chavez led the Terriers at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored, while Garcia also went 2-for-3 with a double, walk and two RBI.

GAME 2: Maryville 7, Hiram 6
After a trio of scoreless frames, Hiram got on the scoreboard first in the top of the fourth inning. Bahena led off with a double and Jeskari Rodriguez reached on a throwing error, scoring Bahena from second to give the Terriers a 1-0 lead.

The Scots responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 2-1 lead. Three-straight singles loaded the bases for Ballard, who knotted the score up with an RBI single up the middle. And after the Terriers made a pitching change, Morgan Brewer drew a walk to give the Scots a 2-1 lead.

Hiram though, came right back to take the lead in the top of the fifth. With one out, Chavez laced a single up the middle, and Garcia followed with an RBI double to even the score at 2-2. A batter later, Bahena singled to put runners on the corners for Rodriguez, who singled down the left-field line to score Garcia and give the Terriers a 3-2 lead.

Lauryn Olguin then singled to load the bases for Leah Valdez, who capped off the inning with a two-run double, extending Hiram's lead to 5-2.

After Rodriguez pitched a scoreless frame, Mariah Sheffield extended Hiram's lead to 6-2 with a homer to left-center, the Terriers' first home run of the year.

But the Scots scratched out an unearned run of a dropped fly ball in the bottom of the sixth to pull within three, and scored four in the bottom of the seventh, walking things off a fielding error to pull out a 7-6 victory.

Rodriguez (0-2) took the loss for Hiram, allowing five runs, four earned, on four hits over three innings pitched, while Kasey Monday (1-0) picked up the win for Maryville.

Bahena went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored to lead the Terriers, while Chavez and Garcia each tallied two hits. Chavez went 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Garcia went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.

Sheffield smacked the first home run of the year for the Terriers, going 1-for-1 with a run scored and RBI, while Valdez went 1-for-4 with a double and two RBI.

The Terriers will look to bounce back on Sunday, March 8 when they travel to Montgomery, Ala. for a doubleheader against Huntingdon College beginning at 2:00 p.m. at Lucinda Samford Cannon Softball Field.
