Hiram Softball Falls Twice at 17th-ranked Berry College

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - March 13, 2020 – Hiram Terriers softball fell twice in their doubleheader against the No. 17-ranked Berry College Vikings on Friday at Kay Williams Field. The Vikings took games one and two by the final score of 6-0 to move to 12-2, while the Terriers fall to 4-10.

GAME 1: #17 Berry 6, Hiram 0
The Vikings scored first against Kaitlyn Hager and Terriers in the bottom of the first inning. Hunter Padgett reached on an error and Makenzie Flynt singled through the right side to put two on with just one out. Bayleigh Masterson then roped a two-run single to right-center, giving Berry a 2-0 lead.

Hager, though, bounced back to pitch 1-2-3 frames in the second, third and fifth innings and worked around a two-out double to keep the Vikings from extending their lead in the bottom of the fourth.

However, the Terriers couldn't get things going offensively, tallying just one hit at the plate, and Berry added to their lead in the bottom of the sixth. Taking advantage of a fielding error, the Vikings scored four unearned runs on three hits, taking a 6-0 lead on Madison Morgan's two-run double.

And Lauren Baccari shut Hiram down in the top of the seventh to finish off the victory. Baccari (4-1) earned the win for Berry, while Hager (1-3) took the loss. Hager allowed six runs, one earned, on eight hits, walking one and striking out two over 5.2 innings pitched.

Senior Alexus Acton got the start for the Terriers at third base, while Melissa Galindo recorded the Terriers' lone hit, going 1-for-2 with a stolen base.

GAME 2: Hiram 6, LaGrange 4
Bailey Scheck kept the Vikings off the scoreboard over the first three frames, stranding four, striking out one and getting two double plays. However, Berry broke through to break the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth.

Hannan Razeq led off with a single and Brooke Whittemore followed with a two-run homer to left-center, giving the Vikings a 2-0 lead. Berry would add another run in the inning on Morgan's RBI single to right, extending their lead to 3-0.

And after the Terriers left two on in the top of the fifth, Berry doubled their lead on Whittemore's three-run blast in the bottom of the inning to take a 6-0.

At the plate, Hiram tallied four hits but left five runners on base. Mariah Sheffield led the Terriers, going 2-for-3 with a double.

Scheck (2-5) took the loss for Hiram, allowing three runs on six hits over 3.2 innings pitched. Madison Hollis (6-0) earned the win for Berry.
