Hiram Men's Basketball Drops Hard-Fought Matchup against No. 14 Wooster

HIRAM, Ohio - January 25, 2020 – Though the Terriers led Wooster for much of the first half, Hiram men's basketball fell to the 14th-ranked Wooster Fighting Scots, 98-76 on Saturday at Price Gymnasium.

Antonio McQueen got the Terriers on the scoreboard first with a made free throw, and Hiram quickly jumped out to a 10-2 lead. Sherman Dean III's 11 first-half points led the Terriers as Hiram built an early lead over the Fighting Scots.

Hiram led by as many as nine in the first half, taking a 15-6 lead on Bordgie Gordon's three-pointer with 14:08 to play, but the Fighting Scots slowing made their way back.

The Terriers led by seven following Sherman Cox's layup with 10:46 to play in the first half, but Keonn Scott answered with a three to cut the lead to four. Kevin Beans Jr. knocked down a three-pointer on the other end to bring Hiram's lead back out to seven before Austin Blatt sunk a layup to once again make it a nine-point, 22-13 lead with 9:53 left in the first.

But over the next three minutes, Wooster went on a run, outscoring the Terriers 14-3 over the stretch to take a 27-25 lead.

Gordon hit a pair of free throws and Dean III knocked down another triple to tie the score at 30, but the Fighting Scots used a 14-5 run to head into the locker room with a nine-point, 44-35 lead.

Hiram shot 44.8 percent in the first half, and 41.7 percent from three.

The Terriers cut the Fighting Scots' lead down to just seven to open the second half, but Wooster found their range and slowly pulled away.

Danyon Hempy knocked down a three with 6:28 to play to give Wooster a 15-point, 80-65 lead before the Terriers made one last run. Nassiem Salem answered Hempy with a three of his own, and McQueen converted a layup to cut the Fighting Scots' lead to 10.

Salem then hit a free throw to make it a nine-point game, but a 7-0 run brought Wooster's lead out to 16, 87-71, and forced the Terriers to take a timeout.

Hiram cut the lead to 14 on Cox's layup, but down the stretch, Wooster knocked down back-to-back threes to take their largest lead of the game and finish off the 98-76 victory.

Hiram falls to 5-12 (2-8 NCAC) with the loss, while No. 14 Wooster moves to 14-3 (8-2 NCAC) with the win.

McQueen led the Terriers with 23 points and seven rebounds, while Dean III added 17 points and two assists.

Off the bench, Cox notched seven rebounds, adding five points, while Salem scored seven, one shy of his career-high.

As a team, Hiram shot 48.4 percent and knocked down seven threes, but the Fighting Scots connected on 13 and shot 56.9 percent from the floor.

The Terriers will wrap up the month of January on Wednesday, Jan. 29 when they travel to Granville, Ohio to take on the Denison University Big Red at 8:00 p.m.
