Box Score GAMBIER, Ohio - January 22, 2020 – Antonio McQueen scored 21 points off the bench, but the Hiram Terriers men's basketball team fell to the Kenyon College Lords, 72-61 on Wednesday at Tomsich Arena.
After a back-and-forth start to the first half, Kenyon built a five-point advantage on back-to-back three-pointers to take a 21-16 lead with 10:20 to play in the first half. Layups by Brodgie Gordon and Sherman Cox cut the lead to just one before Gordon knotted the score at 21-all.
Hiram held the Lords scoreless for almost five minutes before Ugnius Zilinskas converted an and-one opportunity to break the tie and give Kenyon a 24-21 lead.
The Lords led by four down the stretch of the first half before Matt Crane's layup pulled the Terriers back within two with 1:14 to play, but Christian Watanabe sunk a layup with just 11 seconds left in the first to give Keyon a 32-28 lead heading into the locker room.
Gordon led the Terriers, who shot 48 percent from the field in the first half, with seven first-half points.
Hiram quickly closed the gap to just two on Gordon's jumper to open the second half, but the Lords answered with a 5-0 run to take a 37-30 lead, their largest of the game so far.
Kevin Bean Jr.'s layup with 16:07 to play stopped Kenyon's run, but the Lords responded with two three-pointers over the next two minutes to take the first double-digit lead of the game, 45-34 with 14:51 left.
Hiram would cut the deficit to six with 8:14 left in the second half on two Sherman Dean III free throws, but the Lords answered with an 8-0 run to take their largest lead of the game, 58-46 with 6:26 remaining.
The Terriers though, answered with a run of their own, outscoring Kenyon, 12-3 over the next three minutes, pulling within three on McQueen's jumper with 3:08 to play. But once again, the Lords had an answer, outscoring Hiram, 11-3 over the final three minutes to pull away with a 72-61 victory.
Hiram falls to 5-11 (2-7 NCAC) with the loss, while the Lords move to 6-10 (3-6 NCAC) with the win.
McQueen led the Terriers with 21 points, falling just short of a double-double with nine rebounds, while Gordon added 14 points and seven boards.
Hiram shot 41.0 percent from the floor but just 16.7 percent from three, while the Lords knocked down 10 threes, shooting 37.0 percent from beyond the arc.
The Terriers will next host the 14th-ranked Wooster Fighting Scots on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 3 p.m. at Price Gymnasium.
