Softball closes 2016 season with pair of losses at Denison

GRANVILLE, Ohio -- The Hiram College softball team dropped both contests of a doubleheader at Denison to bring a close to the 2016 season on Saturday.

The Big Red (22-14, 11-5 NCAC) took Game 1 by a 9-4 count and recorded a 5-1 win in the second game.

In the opener, Denison was able to jump out to an 7-0 lead through three innings.

Hiram (12-26, 6-10 NCAC) would answer with four runs in the top of the fifth inning to draw closer.

With the bases loaded, senior Jessica Wahl (Akron, Ohio/Ellet) singled him senior Danielle Latine (Eastlake, Ohio/North) to open the scoring.

Junior Dana Perrotta (New Castle, Pa./New Castle) followed with a 2-RBI double and senior Meghan Garland (Mineral Ridge, Ohio/Mineral Ridge) closed out the scoring with a RBI single.

The Big Red would add two more runs in the bottom half of the sixth for the 9-4 win.

Latine went 2-for-3 with a run scored in the loss. In all, seven of the nine Terrier starters recorded a hit.

In Game 2, Denison struck for three runs in the bottom of the third and added another in the fourth frame to take a 4-0 lead.

The Terriers got on the board in the fifth inning as junior Emily Syrjala (Seattle, Wash./Seattle Prep) hit into a RBI groundout that allowed Latine to cross the plate.

The Big Red added another run in the fifth inning en route to the 5-1 victory.
