HIRAM, Ohio -- The Hiram College softball team was swept in a doubleheader by Wittenberg on Friday evening.
Before the start of the twin bill, Hiram paid tribute to the late Myrtis Herndon, honoring all she has done for the college and softball program.
The Tigers (29-6-1, 13-3 NCAC) took the opener 4-2 and won Game 2 in five innings by a 8-0 score.
In the first game, Wittenberg scored twice in the second inning and added a run in the fourth inning to open a 3-0 advantage.
Hiram (12-24, 6-8 NCAC) would answer with two runs in the bottom of the fifth.
With two runners on, junior Dana Perrotta (New Castle, Pa./New Castle) singled to score junior Emily Syrjala (Seattle, Wash./Seattle Prep).
Following an error to load the bases, junior Heather Pahoresky (Mantua, Ohio/Crestwood) was hit by a pitch to score another run and trim the Wittenberg lead to 3-2.
The Terriers were unable to push across any more runs in the fifth inning and the Tigers added a huge insurance run in the top half of the sixth inning en route to the 4-2 win.
Perrotta went 2-for-4 with a RBI to lead the Terrier offense. Senior Meghan Garland (Mineral Ridge, Ohio/Mineral Ridge) struck out four batters between the circle.
In the nightcap, Wittenberg scored one run in the first inning, before exploding for six runs in the fourth frame. The Tigers tacked on another run in the top of the fifth and won due to the NCAA's 8-run rule.
The Terriers will play next on Saturday, April 30, as they travel to take on Denison. The start time of the doubleheader has been pushed up due to the weather forecast and will begin at 10 a.m.
