HIRAM, Ohio -- Senior Jessica Wahl (Akron, Ohio/Ellet) celebrated Senior Day in style by hitting a game winning single in Game 2, to lead the Hiram College softball team to a doubleheader split with Kenyon on Tuesday.
The Ladies (16-21-1, 5-9 NCAC) took the opening game 10-3, but the Terriers (12-22, 6-6 NCAC) posted a 4-3 come-from-behind win the nightcap.
The win also keeps Hiram in the middle of the race for the NCAC Tournament. The Terriers 6-6 record places them in a tie for fifth and is just one game behind in the loss column of fourth place Ohio Wesleyan.
In Game 2, Kenyon jumped out to a 2-0, before Hiram was able to tie the game at 2-2 in the sixth.
The Terriers would load the bases and senior Nicole Hoy (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) doubled into the left field gap to score junior Dana Perrotta (New Castle, Pa./New Castle) and Wahl and tie the game at 2-2.
The Ladies came right back to take a 3-2 lead in the top half of the seventh on a single by Jane Ghublikian.
But it was Hiram who would rally one last time for the dramatic win.
Senior Danielle Latine (Eastlake, Ohio/North) led off the inning with a single and was moved to second on a sac bunt from senior Brittany Bruening (Parma, Ohio/Parma). Junior Emily Syrjala (Seattle, Wash./Seattle Prep) would reach on an error to put two runners on.
Both Latine and Syrjala would move up a base on a wild pitch. Wahl would then lace a single over the head of the Ladies shortstop to score both runners and give Hiram the walkoff win.
Senior Meghan Garland (Mineral Ridge, Ohio/Mineral Ridge) picked up her seventh win in the circle, giving up two earned runs.
In the first game, the Terriers jumped out to a 3-0 lead, thanks to a 3-run second inning.
Hiram would score its first run off of an error by the Ladies third baseman. Wahl would follow with a 2-RBI single to drive in senior Kali Stover (Akron, Ohio/Coventry) and Syrjala.
Kenyon would respond with 10 unanswered runs, scoring six times in the third and four times in the seventh, to post the 10-3 victory.
Junior Brittany Zajac (Corry, Pa./Corry) led the Terrier offense with two hits in the contest.
Hiram will play next on Friday, April 29, as they host Wittenberg at 3:30 p.m. in a key NCAC doubleheader. The Terriers will also honor the late Myrtis Herndon before the start of the twin bill.
