DELAWARE, Ohio -- Senior Meghan Garland (Mineral Ridge, Ohio/Mineral Ridge) fired a shutout in Game 2 to lead the Hiram College softball team to a doubleheader split with Ohio Welseyan on Wednesday.

The Battling Bishops (11-17, 5-5 NCAC) took the first game with a late rally, 4-3, but the Terriers (11-21, 5-5 NCAC) posted a 2-0 win in the nightcap behind a solid effort from Garland.

Despite surrendering nine hits, Garland (6-9) was able to work out of trouble throughout the game. The Battling Bishops put two runners on base in three different innings, but could not score.

Garland also helped herself at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a RBI in the win.

After four scoreless innings, Hiram broke through with a run in the fifth inning on a RBI single by senior Jessica Wahl (Akron, Ohio/Ellet).

The Terriers added a huge insurance run the seventh as junior Emily Syrjala (Seattle, Wash./Seattle Prep) scored on a Garland single through the left side.

OWU would put two runners on in the seventh inning with one out, but Garland was able to induce a flyout and groundout to end the game.

Junior Dana Perrotta (New Castle, Pa./New Castle) collected two hits in the contest.

In Game 1, the Battling Bishops struck for a run in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 1-0 advantage.

The Terriers would add a run in the second and third inning on RBI hits from senior Danielle Latine (Eastlake, Ohio/North) and Garland to jump in front 2-1.

Hiram benefitted from a OWU error in the fifth to expand its lead to 3-1.

But Ohio Wesleyan would rally with a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth inning to grab the 4-3 victory.

Freshman Makenzie Dombrowski (Streetsboro, Ohio/Streetsboro) gave up two earned runs in six innings and falls to 4-12 on the year.

Hiram will return to action on Saturday, April 23, as they host NCAC leading and No. 25-ranked Wittenberg at 1 p.m. The Terriers will also hold a tribute for the late Myrtis Herndon before first pitch of the twin bill at 12:45 p.m.
