HIRAM, Ohio -- The Hiram College softball team used a walkoff win in Game 1 to earn a doubleheader split with Marietta in a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday.

The Terriers also hosted the "Battle for Britt", where Britt Host, a Terrier fan battling Ewing's Sarcoma, threw out the first pitch of the doubleheader. Hiram also sold t-shirts and wristbands and collected donations, with all proceeds going towards Host.

In the first game, the Pioneers (17-17) got on the board with a 2-run homer in the first inning.

The Terriers (9-19) responded to tie the score at 2-2 in the third.

With runners on first and second, junior Dana Perrotta (New Castle, Pa./New Castle) laid down a sacrifice bunt. The Pioneers pitcher fielded the ball, but her throw to first was wide, allowing junior Emily Syrjala (Seattle, Wash./Seattle Prep) to score. Senior Meghan Garland (Mineral Ridge, Ohio/Mineral Ridge) would follow with a RBI groundout to tie the game.

Marietta looked poised to win the game in the seventh inning, benefitting from a few Terrier errors to take a 3-2 advantage.

But Hiram would put together a rally in the seventh to notch the walkoff win.

With two outs and the bases loaded, senior Nicole Hoy (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) worked a full count, before drawing a walk to tie the game at 3-3.

Junior Brittany Zajac (Corry, Pa./Corry) would follow with a drive over the head of the Pioneer centerfielder to drive in Garland and give the Terriers the win.

Zajac also recorded her first win of the season between the circle, giving up two earned runs and striking out four batter.

In all, seven different Terriers would record a hit in the victory

In Game 2, the Pioneers scored twice in the third and fourth, while adding a run in the seventh for the 5-0 victory.

Zajac paced the Hiram offense for the second consecutive contest, recording two hits.

Hiram will be back at it on Tuesday, April 19, as they host a doubleheader against NCAC foe Wooster. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
