HIRAM, Ohio -- The Hiram College softball team extended its winning streak to four games with a doubleheader sweep of Grove City (Pa.) on Tuesday afternoon.

The Terriers (4-10) took the first game 5-2 and scored two runs in the seventh to earn a 4-3 walkoff win in Game 2.

In the first game, Grove City scored a run in the top of the first, but Hiram answered with two in the bottom of the frame to jump in front 2-1.

Senior Meghan Garland (Mineral Ridge, Ohio/Mineral Ridge) laced a triple to left center to score senior Jessica Wahl (Akron, Ohio/Ellet). The relay throw to third by Grove City was high and went into the dugout, allowing Garland to touch home on the play.

The Terriers expanded their lead in the third inning on a RBI single by senior Nicole Hoy (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick).

The Wolverines answered with a run in the fourth, but Hiram responded with two in the bottom of the frame.

Junior Brittany Zajac (Corry, Pa./Corry) drove in junior Dana Perrotta (New Castle, Pa./New Castle) with a RBI single and senior Brittany Bruening (Parma, Ohio/Parma) also had a RBI single in the inning.

Garland (2-5) was in control on the mound throughout, firing a complete game and striking out two batters. Her victory was the 27th of her career, which moves her into third place in program history for career wins.

Garland and Zajac led Hiram on the offensive end, each collecting two hits.

In Game 2, the Terriers trailed 3-2 in the seventh inning, before rallying for two runs for the walkoff win.

Hoy led off the seventh with a single and was moved to second on a sac bunt by Bruening.

Senior Kali Stover (Akron, Ohio/Coventry) came up and hit a rocket to short that skipped under the glove of the Wolverine shortstop. Hoy came around to score on the play and Stover moved to second on the throw.

Senior and pinch runner Danielle Latine (Eastlake, Ohio/North) moved to third on a passed ball and junior Emily Syrjala (Seattle, Wash./Seattle Prep) singled through the left side to give Hiram the thrilling win.

Grove City scored in the first and held a 1-0 lead until the third, when Perrotta singled to score Syrjala.

The Wolverines would add a run in the fourth and sixth, before the Terriers pulled to within 3-2 in the sixth on a RBI double by Perrotta.

Hiram would then complete the sweep with the seventh inning rally.

Perrotta went 2-for-3 with two RBI's and Syrjala also went 2-for-3 with a RBI and a run scored.

Freshman Makenzie Dombrowski (Streetsboro, Ohio/Streetsboro) moved to 2-5 on the season, striking out five batters and surrendering three earned runs.

Hiram will have a quick turnaround and will put its four-game win streak on the line on Wednesday, March 23, as the Terriers host crosstown rival John Carroll in a doubleheader that will begin at 3 p.m.
