Softball falls to Muskingum and Simpson (Iowa)

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- The Hiram College softball team dropped a pair of low scoring affairs to Muskingum and Simpson (Iowa) at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Florida on Thursday.

The Terriers (0-8) fell to Muskingum (3-4) 1-0 and to Simpson (16-3) 5-1.

Against Muskingum, senior Meghan Garland (Mineral Ridge, Ohio/Mineral Ridge) fired a complete game in the circle for Hiram. She scattered just five hits, giving up one earned run and striking out two batters.

The Fighting Muskies scored the lone run of the game in third inning on a sacrifice fly.

Hiram threatened in the fourth inning, putting runners on second and third, but could not score.

In the game against Simpson, the Storm scored two times in the second inning to build a 2-0 lead.

Hiram answered with a run in the third inning as senior Jessica Wahl (Akron, Ohio/Ellet) singled home senior Danielle Latine (Eastlake, Ohio/North).

Simpson answered with a run in the third and two more in the fourth for the 5-1 victory.

Wahl collected two hits to lead Hiram in the contest. Freshman Makenzie Dombrowski (Streetsboro, Ohio/Streetsboro) gave up two earned runs in four innings on the rubber and Garland fired two scoreless frames in relief.

Hiram will close out its spring trip on Friday, March 11, by taking on Rhodes (Tenn.) at 9 a.m. and Bluffton at 11:15 a.m.
