HIRAM, Ohio -- The Hiram College women's soccer team dropped a 3-2 heartbreaker to Wittenberg in overtime on Saturday evening.
The Terriers are now 5-11-0 on the season and 1-5-0 in NCAC play, while the Tigers stand at 8-5-2, 3-2-1.
Before the match, Hiram honored its four seniors for their hard work and dedication to the program.
The Tigers jumped on the board first at the 10:37 mark when Leah Souter sent a pass to Kate Burns, who beat the keeper.
But that lead was short live as the Terriers answered just over a minute later. Junior Kaitlin Zemanski (Munroe Falls, Ohio/Stow-Munroe Falls) sent in a corner kick that junior Abbey Rowe (Mt. Orab, Ohio/Lynchburg) was able to control. She rocketed a shot from the top of the box to the lower right and into the net to knot the score at 1-1.
Hiram jumped in front at the 17:46 mark, when junior Allie Glatt (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) beat the goalie for her team leading 11th goal of the season.
In the second half, the Tigers would tie the score at 2-2 when Burns took a shot that was denied by sophomore Alina Mille (Medina, Ohio/Medina). The ball bounced back into play and Burns was able to bury her shot in the net in the 63rd minute.
Neither team was able to score in the remainder of regulation, sending the game into overtime.
Early in the overtime, Glatt sent a through ball to junior Katelyn Mauch (Parma, Ohio/Normandy). Mauch fired a shot that sailed just high, keeping the score tied at 2-2.
Late in the second overtime session, Wittenberg's Emma Box converted on the game winner, allowing the Tigers to escape with the 3-2 win.
Senior Kailie Reed (Wadsworth, Ohio) made two saves in one half of action and Mille made four saves in the second half and overtime.
Wittenberg held a 19-13 edge in shots. Both teams fired six corner kicks in the contest.
Hiram will be back at it on Saturday as they take on Oberlin at Henry Field. The contest is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
