Box Score HIRAM, Ohio -- The Hiram College men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season by a 2-1 score to Carnegie Mellon (Pa.) in the championship of the Hiram College Terrier Classic on Saturday evening at Henry Field.
The Terriers are now 3-1-0 on the season, while the Tartans push their record to 2-2-0.
HC had a chance to get on the board early in the contest.
Senior Ryan Kramarz (Chesterland/West Geauga) fired a shot from the top of the box, but CMU goalie Jacob Rice made a diving stop on the play.
The Tartans would get on the board in the 26th minute when Connor Webb deflected a free kick into the back of the net.
CMU added another goal in the 53rd minute in the second half to push its lead to 2-0.
But Hiram answered in the 69th minute.
Senior Andy Harding (Akron/Revere) controlled the ball in the box and passed to his right, where he found Kramarz who found the back of the net, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
Hiram kept up the pressure and fired numerous shots in the closing minutes.
With under a minute to go, the Terriers were fouled and sent a free kick into the box that bounced around and resulted in a corner kick.
With eight seconds remaining, junior Richie Webb (London, England/Laude Lady Elizabeth School) sent a corner kick into the box.
The ball was live and bouncing around before freshman Peterson Occilien (Columbia, S.C./Blytewood) took a shot that hit the post as time expired.
Junior goalie Matt Sacher (Akron/Coventry) made three saves in goal in one half of action and sophomore Chris Lindemeyer (Lodi/Cloverleaf) made two stops in the other half of action.
Hiram outshot the Tartans 13-8 and also held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Hiram will return to action on Wednesday, when it travels to take on Franciscan at 5 p.m.
