Softball Splits Games Against Albion and Wheaton

KISSIMMEE, FLA.  --  The Hiram College softball team defeated Albion (Mich.) College, 10-1 in five innings, but fell to Wheaton (Mass.) College, 9-4, as the Terriers continue their annual spring trip in Florida.

In the game against Albion, the Hiram offense had 14 hits and scored 10 runs.  Six of those runs came in the top of the first inning that included a two-RBI triple by sophomore outfielder Danielle Latine (Eastlake/North) and a RBI-triple by junior infielder Kayla Schmidt (Garfield Heights).  The Terriers added a pair of runs in the second thanks to RBI base hits by senior All-Region catcher Jess Bolanz (Randolph/Waterloo) and junior second baseman Angela Perella (Lyndhurst/Beaumont) to make the score 8-0.  Hiram then went on to score runs in the third and fourth innings off the bats of freshman outfielder Sarah Brady (Norton) and freshman pitcher/first baseman Brittany Zajac (Corry, Pa./Corry) with a solo homerun by to go up 10-0.  In the bottom of the fifth inning, Albion got on the board with its only run of the game, but Hiram maintained a lead of eight or more runs, putting the run-rule into effect, ending the game and clinching a 10-1 victory.

Hiram had four players record multiple hits including Schmidt and senior All-North Coast Athletic Conference outfielder Sarah Loyer (Barrie, Ontario/St. Joseph's) both finishing two-of-two at the plate.  Schmidt also added a RBI, while Loyer scored a pair of runs.  Zajac and Perella both went two-of-three with Zajac scoring two runs and two RBI.  Perella also scored a run and drove in two runs.

At pitcher, sophomore Taylor Miller (Kent/Roosevelt) pitched the entire game and got the win allowing just one run on three hits and struck out three batters.

Against Wheaton, Hiram grabbed the early lead with a run in the bottom of the second inning on a RBI-single by sophomore shortstop/second baseman Jessica Wahl (Akron/Ellet).  Wheaton then went on a six-run scoring streak, beginning with three runs in the third on a bases clearing double and three more runs in the fifth.  In the bottom of the fifth, Hiram crossed the plate once thanks to a run-scoring single by freshman outfielder Dana Perrotta (New Castle, Pa./New Castle).  The Terriers added a pair of runs in the sixth on a RBI-single by Zajac that also included a defensive error that allowed another Hiram player to score, cutting the deficit to 6-4.  Wheaton put the game away in the top of the seventh with three runs and held Hiram scoreless in the bottom half of the frame to go on to the 9-4 win.

Offensively, both teams accounted for 14 hits.  The Terriers were led by the duo of Wahl and Zajac who both had three hits on the day.  Wahl ended the game three-of-five to go along with a RBI.  Zajac turned in a three-for-four effort and also had a RBI.  Loyer and Perella rounded out the multi-hit performances with Loyer finishing two-of-three and scored a run, while Perella finished with two hits in three attempts.

On the mound, sophomore Meghan Garland (Mineral Ridge) started the game and pitched five-and-a-third innings, but would suffer the loss after allowing six runs, three earned, on 11 hits.  Miller came on to finish the game and gave up three runs on three hits and struck out two hitters.
