Box Score 2 ANDERSON, IND. -- The Hiram College softball team played its second doubleheader in as many days, but would come out on the short end of a pair of one-run games against Anderson (Ind.) University, 6-5 and 3-2, in non-conference action in Anderson, Ind.
With the losses, the Terriers are now 9-9 overall and the Ravens improve to 13-8 overall for the season.
Hiram trailed early in the first game, 1-0, after the first inning, but would come back to tie the score at 1-1 in the top of the second thanks to a solo homerun by sophomore shortstop Jessica Bolanz (Randolph/Waterloo) to begin the inning. The Ravens quickly regained the lead with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning to make the score 2-1. Hiram looked to take control in the third scoring four runs that included a three-run shot by senior third baseman Ashley Pike (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo). The Terriers maintained their three-run lead heading into the bottom of the fifth when Anderson crossed the plate four times on a grand slam to take over the lead at 6-5. Hiram would threaten in the seventh with bases loaded, but with two outs. The Terriers recorded the final out on a popup to the Anderson second baseman giving the Ravens a one-run win.
Hiram outhit Anderson, 15-9, in the game and was led by senior utility player Kelly Langland (Batavia/McNicholas) who finished three-of-five at the plate. Bolanz went two-of-three with a pair of runs scored and a RBI. Pike ended the game two-of-four including a run scored and three RBI.
Junior Ashley Hinkle (Parma) started the game and pitched four innings allowing four runs on seven hits. Senior Amethyst Brigham (Middlefield/Ohio State) came on to pitch a third of an inning in relief and was given the loss, dropping her to 3-3 overall. She gave up two runs on one hit. Freshman Taylor Charles (Akron/Ellet) finished the game going an inning and two-thirds while allowing no runs on just one hit and struck out two batters.
In game two, Hiram led 2-1 after the first inning with the Terrier runs coming on a RBI single by Bolanz and a wild pitch later in the inning. Anderson later evenend the score at 2-2 with a run in the bottom of the fifth and recorded the game-winning run in the seventh on a walk-off homerun to clinch the 3-2 victory.
The Hiram bats cooled off in the second game recording just four hits by four different players. Bolanz ended the game one-of-three with a RBI. Sophomore outfielder Sarah Loyer (Barrie, Ontario/St. Joseph's) also finished one-of-three and scored a run.
On the mound, Charles pitched the entire game, but fell to 5-5 overall this season with the loss. In six-and-a-third innings, she allowed three runs, two earned, on seven hits and tallied eight strikeouts.
Hiram will travel to University Heights on Wednesday, Apr. 4 for a non-conference doubleheader against John Carroll University. The first game is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
