HIRAM, Ohio – September 25, 2024 – The Hiram College women's soccer team fell 3-1 at home to St. Mary's in a hard-fought non-conference match up under the lights at Charles A. Henry Field on Wednesday evening.
Sophomore forward
Bella Simmons spearheaded Hiram's attack throughout the match. In the first half, Simmons came very close to giving the Terriers the lead, firing two powerful shots—one narrowly missing the goal and the other striking the crossbar. Those close calls could have turned the tide early for Hiram, but still ignited the team's fighting spirit, pushing the Terriers to remain competitive.
Saint Mary's capitalized on its opportunities in the first half, with Isabella Kreydich scoring twice in a four-minute span. Her goals in the 22nd and 26th minutes left Hiram trailing 2-0 at the break despite goalkeeper
Emma Deffenbaugh making six critical saves to keep the deficit manageable.
The Terriers came out with just as high of an energy level in the second half, determined to battle back. Simmons finally broke through in the 51st minute, netting a well-deserved goal to cut the lead to 2-1. The goal injected life into the Terriers' attack; the team would keep applying the pressure, recording six shots on goal in the half. Senior defender
Mackenzie Morrison also came close to equalizing twice, as Hiram pushed hard for the tying goal.
St. Mary's weathered the storm and, in the 75th minute, Mary Kaczynski scored a third goal to seal the victory for the visitors.
The Terriers will look to bounce back as they head on the road to face Heidelberg University this Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Hidden Valley Soccer Complex
