Terriers Defense Holds Strong In Close Loss At Heidelberg

Hiram Falls In Tiffin Despite Strong Effort

TIFFIN, Ohio – September 28, 2024 - Hiram College women's soccer fell 2-0 on the road to Heidelberg in a non-conference matchup at the Hidden Valley Soccer Complex.

The first half saw Heidelberg take the lead in the 25th minute, when Alayna Hahn found the back of the net with an assist from Brianna Braatz. Hiram's defense, led by goalkeeper Emma Deffenbaugh, worked hard to keep the score close, with Deffenbaugh making key saves keeping Heidelberg from extending its lead early on in the match?.

The second half opened with Heidelberg capitalizing on a penalty kick in the 48th minute, leading to the Student Princes to score and push the lead to 2-0. Hiram responded to this with a more aggressive approach in the final 45 minutes, recording all four of their shots in the second half. All four of those shots were on target and came from four different student-athletes, but Heidelberg's goalkeeper, Brigid Enright, denied each attempt. Despite Hiram's efforts to create offensive chances, they were unable to break through the Heidelberg defense?.

Deffenbaugh finished the match with eight saves, keeping Hiram within reach throughout, but Heidelberg's advantage in shots (16-4) and corner kicks (8-1) helped seal the win. Hiram will look to regroup and build on their defensive resilience as they head into conference play.

Next up for the Terriers is one last non-conference matchup against the University of Mount Union on Tuesday at 7 p.m. from Henry Field in Hiram, Ohio.
