FORT WAYNE, Indiana – January 27, 2024 – The Hiram women's wrestling team finished up its weekend at Indiana Tech with a number of notable results as part of the Warrior Duals on Friday and the Warrior Open on Saturday.
The team beat Trine (23-14) and lost to Life (42-5), Indiana Tech (41-6) and Siena Heights (33-10) on Friday before the student-athletes each competed in separate brackets on Saturday.
Erika Novak (155 lbs) was first to pick up a victory, as she beat Life's Coleby Velasquez by fall (1:57) to score the team its five points in the dual.
Against Trine, all five of Hiram's student-athletes picked up wins: Caitlin Lewis (116 lbs) by fall (5:11), Mallory Chunat (136 lbs) by decision (11-4), Allydia Byard (143 lbs) by fall (0:35) and Novak by fall (4:44).
Chunat kept it rolling, beating Indiana Tech's Brooklyn Figueroa by fall (0:54) and Siena Heights' Cadence Wallace by technical fall (10-0) to give her a three-win day. She joined Novak as the Hiram student-athletes to pick up multiple victories.
On Saturday, Chunat advanced all the way to the fourth round in the consolation bracket with three wins: decision over Indiana Tech (7-0), technical fall over Campbellsville (10-0) and injury default over Campbellsville.
Byard followed suit with a trip to the third round of the consolation bracket at 143 lbs. She won against Adrian's Nahomi Marmolejo by fall (1:23). Erika Novak did the same at 155 lbs, with wins over Life by fall (2:19) and Lindenwood by fall (2:48).
Next up will be the Quad Cities D3 Invite on Friday and Saturday in Eastern Moline, IL.
