Terriers Swimming Sweeps Chatham To Open Season

Hiram Starts 2023-24 On High Note

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania – October 14, 2023 – It was an auspicious start to the season for the Terriers swimming teams, as the men and women swept Chatham on Saturday afternoon at Sigo Falk Natatorium: 190-45 (men) and 130.5-128.5 (women).

The results give both teams a 1-0 record, with a pair of dual meets scheduled for this upcoming week.

Men's Recap

The men's team piled up the wins right from the start; the 4x50-yard medley relay team of Dayne Sauter, Adam Johnson, Joe Krosky and David Slovenkay finished first with a time of 1:47.14. Owen Pastorius followed it up with a top mark of 11:33.59 in the 1,000-yard freestyle, and Dayne Sauter breezed his way to a 1st-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle (1:52.96).

The next student-athletes to finish first were Landon Hughes in the 50-yard backstroke (29.54), Jon Hybil in the 50-yard breaststroke (30.26), Ethan O'Malley in the 50-yard freestyle (24.23) and Slovenkay in the 100-yard freestyle (52.47).

Then came the multi-race winners, with Sauter also winning the 100-yard backstroke (1:01.17) and Johnson taking down both the 100-yard breaststroke (1:09.37) and 200-yard IM (2:16.46).

The 4x50-yard freestyle relay team consisting of Sauter, Slovenkay, O'Malley and Pastorious wrapped up the meet with a 1:34.20 time to seal the dominant effort.

Women's Recap

Natalie Brown kicked off the women's season with a win in the 1,000-yard freestyle, with a strong 13:04.88 time to give her team something to build on. Avery Clay was next in line, placing at the top of the field in the 50-yard backstroke (33.12) to earn the first win of her collegiate career.

Elena Rinaldi finished first in the 100-yard butterfly (1:07.50) and Brown returned to the scoring column with a win in the 500-yard freestyle (6:17.91) to finish off her season debut in style. Rinaldi gave the Terriers some breathing room with a winning 29.78 time in the 50-yard butterfly.

With the meet being close, Hiram needed every point it could get. The team was able to secure the win by placing first in the 4x50-yard freestyle relay – the team of Brown, Haven Papineau, Rinaldi and Moraine Jackson had a 1:55.77 mark to give the team a two-point victory.

What's Next

Both teams will now get set for a busy second week of the regular season, with dual meets at Bluffton on Friday and a home meet against Wittenberg on Saturday.
