HIRAM, Ohio – December 16, 2022 – Hiram put forth a strong effort in its first home meet of the 2022-23 season, taking an early lead before losing to Muskingum, 31-18. Friday marked the 3
rd dual inside Price Gymnasium since the men's wrestling program was re-established in 2019 for the 2020-21 season.
Beginning the night was a ceremony for the team's seniors,
Devan Welch and
Kwame Stewart, who were honored for their efforts with the Hiram men's wrestling program.
Corey Casterline,
Alex Savering,
Seth Holt and Welch all recorded wins in front of the home crowd.
Ian Fuentes (125 lbs) lost by fall to Hunter Heck (1:55) in the first match of the evening.
Casterline got the Terriers on the board early in the 133-lb weight class, beating Elijah Burkhart by decision (10-4). Savering (141 lbs.) would follow with a win by forfeit to put Hiram in the lead, 9-6.
Will Brodbeck (149 lbs) lost to Tanner Donathan by major decision (12-1) before
Kaelon Lawson-West (157 lbs) lost by fall to Gavin Greer (2:27). Muskingum regained the overall advantage in the dual, 16-9, with the two victories.
Holt (165 lbs) put his team back in the win column with a win by decision against Camron Callahan (10-6).
Jimmy Thomas (174 lbs) worked hard and nearly pulled off a late comeback in the third period before losing by decision to Isaac Sell (8-7).
Muskingum pulled away in the later stages of the dual thanks to a pair of pins against Stewart at 184 lbs (2:49) and
Zach Harper at 197 lbs (2:11).
Welch (285 lbs) finished the meet on a high note, winning by fall against Jacob Baca (0:54) to bring the margin to 31-18. The senior from Mentor, Ohio celebrated the victory in front of a roaring home crowd.
Hiram will return to the mats on January 7 in the AMCC Quad meet at Pitt-Bradford in Bradford, Pennsylvania.
