NORTH BOSTON, N.Y. - April 13, 2021 – Hiram College Men's Volleyball Head Coach
Kevin Kustura was named the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Men's Volleyball Coach of the Year, as announced by the conference on Tuesday.
In his first season with the program, Kustura led the Terriers to a perfect 7-0 record in AMCC conference play and an 8-1 record overall during the regular season. Hiram won their first-ever AMCC regular season championship and clinched the No. 1 in the AMCC Championship Tournament under Kustura, before topping No. 4 Penn St. Altoona and No. 3 Penn St. Behrend in the championship tournament to clinch the first AMCC Conference Championship as well as the first NCAA Division III Men's Volleyball Tournament berth in program history.
"As a program in just its fourth year, we certainly are grateful to our prior coaches, our prior athletic director, Ellen Dempsey, and generous donors for the vision and strong launch of men's volleyball at Hiram College," Director of Athletics Todd W. Hibbs said. "However, make no mistake, this team has completely bought into Coach Kustura's approach to training and competition and has thrived under his tutelage. We are both excited for this moment and the future. Kevin is indeed the coach of the year and I'm happy that his peers felt the same way."
Under Kustura's tutelage, four Terriers earned All-AMCC honors, including two first-team selections in
Kilvio Montero and
Tom Supan, who was also named the AMCC Player of the Year, after being named the AMCC Preseason Player of the Year prior to the start of conference play.
The Terriers led the conference in numerous categories with Kustura at the helm, finishing first in the AMCC in kills per set (12.02), hitting percentage (.277) and assists per set (11.10), and second in service aces per set (1.69), digs per set (11.45) and blocks per set (1.58).
Hiram also ranks in the Top 20 in the NCAA in digs per set (7th), hitting percentage (13th), kills per set (16th) and assists per set (17th) under Kustura.
Kustura is the first coach in program history to earn AMCC Coach of the Year honors.
The Terriers will face the 4th-ranked Vassar College Brewers in the opening round of the 2021 NCAA Div. III Men's Volleyball Tournament in Salem, Va. On Wednesday, April 21 at 2:30 p.m., with the winner advancing to the quarterfinals to take on Dominican University (Ill.) on April 22.
