HIRAM, Ohio -- Senior Greg Summers (Lancaster, N.Y./St. Mary's) scored five times, but the Hiram College men's lacrosse team dropped a 19-12 home NCAC decision to Wabash (Ind.) on Sunday.
The Terriers are now 1-9 on the season and 0-5 in conference play, while the Little Giants improve to 5-6, 1-3.
Before the start, Hiram honored 11 student-athletes for their contributions to the program as part of Senior Day festivities.
Summers five goals give him a total of 19 on the season, which is second on the team. He has scored in every game this season for Hiram.
Wabash got things rolling early, scoring the first five goals, before Summers took a pass from sophomore Justin Dionne (Orlando, Fla./Timber Creek) and scored on a man-up situation.
The Little Giants led 5-1 after one period.
Wabash scored the first two goals of the second to open a 7-1 lead.
Sophomore Nick Rollason (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North) would find the back of the net at the 9:39 mark of the second stanza to pull the Terriers within 7-2. Sophomore Evan Pinney (Richfield, Ohio/Revere) recorded the assist on the play.
The Little Giants closed out the half with four more goals and took an 11-2 edge into the break.
Hiram came out strong in the third quarter, getting goals from senior Chris Lekan (North Olmsted, Ohio/Holy Name), Dionne and Summers to trim the Wabash lead to 11-5.
The Little Giants would counter with a goal, but Hiram came right back with scores from Rollason and Summers to pull within 12-7 with 3:34 left in the third quarter.
Wabash would have an answer and scored four goals in the final 2:52 of the period to take a 16-7 advantage into the final frame.
Pinney scored just 19 seconds into the fourth quarter, but Wabash had an answer just 1:11 later to open up a 17-8 edge.
Goals from senior Garet Johnston (Kent, Ohio/Wooster) and Summers trimmed the Little Giant lead to 17-10 with just over nine minutes left.
But Hiram would be unable to get any closer as the teams would each exchange a pair of goals the rest of the way, with sophomore Jonah Austin (Tecumseh, Mich./Tecumseh) and Summers each registering a score for the Terriers.
Rollason finished with two goals for the Terriers, while Dionne and Pinney each had three assists.
Senior Sawyer Lott (Sunbury, Ohio/Big Walnut) made 14 stops in goal.
Hiram will play next on Thursday, April 14 at home against Cleary (Mich.) at 7 p.m.
