HIRAM, Ohio -- The Hiram College men's lacrosse team fell 14-5 in its season opener to Thiel (Pa.) on Wednesday afternoon.
The Terriers are now 0-1 on the season, while the Tomcats are 2-1.
Senior Greg Summers (Lancaster, N.Y./St. Mary's) and sophomore Nick Rollason (Pickerington, Ohio/North) each scored twice for Hiram.
Senior Chris Lekan (North Olmsted, Ohio/Holy Name) tallied a goal and an assist and sophomore Justin Dionne (Orlando, Fla./Timber Creek) dished out two assists.
Thiel scored twice in the first period and added three scores in the first seven minutes of the second stanza to take a 5-0 lead.
Hiram would answer by taking advantage of a man-up situation, with Summers scoring his first goal of the game, at the 5:46 mark of the frame.
Rollason added another Terrier man-up score with 41 seconds left in the first half, to cut Thiel's lead to 5-2.
The Tomcats had an answer just seven seconds later to expand its lead to 6-2.
Lekan was able to draw Hiram closer, rocketing a shot into the net with one second left in the opening half of play to trim Thiel's lead to 6-3 at the break.
Rollason brought the Terriers to within two goals, 6-4, with his second score of the contest at the 13:41 mark of the third period.
But the Tomcats had an answer with four consecutive goals to open up a 10-4 lead.
Summers scored his second goal of the game at the 6:21 mark of the third quarter. But the Tomcats were able to stay in control, holding Hiram scoreless for the final 21 minutes and adding four more goals.
Senior Sawyer Lott (Sunbury, Ohio/Big Walnut) made 14 stops in goal for the Terriers.
Senior Charley Haley (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) sophomore Evan Pinney (Richfield, Ohio/Revere) and Lott all recorded four ground ball pickups.
Thiel held a 44-28 edge in shots.
Hiram will now embark on a two game road trip over spring break, beginning with a 6 p.m. contest at Hope (Mich.) on Thursday, March 10.
