HIRAM, Ohio -- The Hiram College volleyball team recorded 40 kills and a .393 hitting mark to power its way past Oberlin by a 25-18, 25-21, 25-22 score on Wednesday.
The Terriers improve to 13-5 overall and 2-1 in the NCAC, while the Yeowomen fall to 6-8, 2-1.
Hiram recorded just seven attack errors in the match and was led by junior Marissa Jay (Parma, Ohio/Padua Franciscan), who had 12 kills and a .625 hitting mark.
Senior Lindsay Brewer (New Franklin, Ohio/Manchester) had nine kills and senior Emily Mortimer (Mogadore, Ohio/Field) had seven.
Junior Laura Kelly (Massillon, Ohio/Jackson) had a match-high 14 digs and junior Claire Maier (Huntsville, Ohio/Indian Lake) had 32 assists.
Hiram was able to build a seven point lead in the first set before Oberlin cut the lead to 20-18. But Hiram would score the final five points of the set and win it by a 25-18 count.
The Terriers jumped out to a 6-1 early lead in the second set, but the Yeowomen would storm back and take a 10-9 lead.
Hiram would regain the lead at 17-16 on an attack error. The Terriers would slowly pull away in the set and another attack error clinched the set by a 25-21 count.
The teams found themselves knotted at 15-15 miday through the third frame. Hiram would slowly pull away again and a kill by Jay would put the Terriers up 23-18.
The Yeowomen would win the next three points, but kills from senior Katie Barton (Newbury, Ohio) and Mortimer closed out the match and set.
Ave Spencer led the Oberlin offense with 10 kills.
Hiram will play next on Saturday, when it hosts Kenyon in a NCAC matchup at 1 p.m.
