HIRAM, Ohio -- For the third consecutive weekend, senior Lindsay Brewer (New Franklin, Ohio) was named to the All-Tournament team as the Hiram College volleyball team swept past Mount Saint Joseph and Kalamazoo (Mich.) to finish off a perfect 4-0 record at the Hiram Invitational.
Brewer was named MVP of the invitational and to the All-Tournament Team. Junior Claire Maier (Huntsville, Ohio/Indian Lake) and junior Marissa Jay (Parma, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) also earned All-Tournament Team accolades.
In addition to her honors this weekend, Brewer has also earned All-Tournament Team honors at the Captains Classic hosted by Christopher Newport (Va.) on September 4 and 5 and the Marcia French Memorial Invitational hosted by Baldwin Wallace on September 11 and 12.
Hiram (11-3) opened play Saturday with a 25-20, 25-18, 25-16 victory over Mount Saint Joseph (5-7).
Jay finished with a match high 12 kills and a .786 hitting mark. Brewer added 11 kills and senior Katie Barton (Newbury, Ohio) added seven.
Junior Laura Kelly (Massillon, Ohio/Jackson) tallied 14 digs and Maier added 33 assists.
Hiram would use a use a 7-1 run to break open a 9-9 tie in the opening set. The Lions would get to within 20-18 before the Terriers reeled off the final five points of the set, capped off on a block assist by senior Emily Mortimer (Mogadore, Ohio/Field) and Barton.
In Set 2, Hiram jumped out to a 12-8 lead and never looked back, en route to a 25-18 victory.
The Terriers would build as large of a lead in the third set as 16-4. The Lions would get as close as seven points in the frame, but could draw no closer, giving the set and match to Hiram.
As a team, Hiram hit .267 and had 40 kills in the win.
Against Kalamazoo (1-10), Brewer led three Terriers in double figure kills with 11. Barton added 10 and Mortimer also finished with 10, which is a new season-best.
Kelly finished with 12 digs, junior Ashton Webb (Wadsworth, Ohio/Norton) had 11 and junior Megan Schaefer (Elyria, Ohio) tallied 10. Maier also had 38 assists.
Hiram cruised in the opening set, building an early 12-5 on its way to a 25-13 victory.
The second set was tight and the Hornets opened up a 21-18 lead late. Hiram would counter and win the next five points to take a 23-21 lead.
But Kalamazoo would win three of the next four points and knot the score at 24-24. The teams would continue trading points, before the Terriers won the final three of the frame, getting two kills from Mortimer and one from Brewer to win the set 30-28.
In the third set, Hiram built an early 11-7 lead and never let the Hornets get within four the rest of way, clinching the match and set by a 25-17 count.
The Terriers finished with 50 kills against just 12 errors, for a .355 hitting percentage.
Hiram will be back at it on Tuesday, when they travel to take on No. 19 Mount Union at 7 p.m.
