HIRAM, Ohio -- Senior Lindsay Brewer (New Franklin, Ohio/Manchester) became the seventh player in school history to record 1,000 career kills as the Hiram College volleyball team swept Penn State-Behrend 25-14, 25-11, 25-22 on Tuesday night.
The Terriers have now won five in a row and are 7-3 on the season, while the Lions stand at 5-5.
Brewer finished the match with 11 kills, giving her exactly 1,000 kills in her career.
Her milestone kill clinched the third set and match for the Terriers. Brewer needs just 34 more kills to move into sixth place all-time.
As a team, Hiram hit a scorching .383 in the victory, registering 48 kills against just 12 errors.
Senior Katie Barton (Newbury, Ohio) had a match-high 13 kills and junior Marissa Jay (Parma, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) added nine.
The Terriers wasted no time grabbing the lead, winning nine of the first 10 points to build a 9-1 lead. Hiram led by as many as 13 points in the opening frame, cruising to a 25-14 victory.
The Terriers jumped out a early 5-1 lead in Set 2 and never looked back, building as a lead as large as 15 points at 23-8. A kill from senior Emily Mortimer (Mogadore, Ohio/Field) gave Hiram the second set by a 25-11 count.
The third set was tight before Hiram was able to build a 22-16 lead. The Lions would reel off four straight points to get within 22-20, before the Terriers responded with two point of their own.
After two more PSU-Behrend points, Brewer's historic kill finished off the sweep for Hiram.
Defensively, junior Laura Kelly (Massillon, Ohio/Jackson) finished with 11 digs and Brewer added 10, for her for her seventh double-double of the year. Junior Claire Maier (Huntsville, Ohio/Indian Lake) chipped in with 38 assists on the night.
Hiram will return to action on Friday and Saturday when it hosts the Hiram Invitational. The Terriers will take on Marietta and Fredonia State (N.Y.) on Friday and Mount Saint Joseph and Kalamazoo (Mich.) on Saturday.
