Volleyball advances to NCAC Tournament Semifinals with sweep of Denison

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio -- The Hiram College volleyball team aveneged an early season loss by sweeping past Denison in the NCAC Tournament Quarterfinals on Friday.

The Terriers (21-10) fell to the Big Red (13-13) in a five-set thriller on October 10, but Hiram cruised to a 25-17, 25-20, 25-11 victory on Friday.

Hiram limited Denison to a -.020 hitting mark, thanks to 22 total blocks (two solo, 20 assists).

Senior Logan Brewer (New Franklin, Ohio/Manchester) had seven total blocks (five assists, two solo) and junior Marissa Jay (Parma, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) had four block assists.

Jay also led the Terrier offensive attack with 10 kills and a .280 hitting mark.

Senior Katie Barton (Newbury, Ohio/Newbury) and senior Lindsay Brewer (New Franklin, Ohio/Manchester) each finished with seven kills.

Junior Claire Maier (Hunstville, Ohio/Indian Lake) dished out 24 assists and junior Laura Kelly (Massillon, Ohio/Jackson) had a match-high 12 digs.

The Terriers led from the get go and opened up a 11-4 lead in the first set on a block assist by Logan Brewer and Maier.

Hiram opened its largest lead at 22-11 on a kill by Lindsay Brewer. Denison would pull to within 23-17, before a kill by Logan Brewer and an attack error gave the Terriers the opening set.

In Set 2, the Terriers used an early 5-0 spurt to take an 8-5 advantage. Hiram would hold the lead the entire set and captured the final two points on a kill by Lindsay Brewer and a bad set to capture the set by a 25-20 count.

The Terriers built an early lead in the third set and pushed it out to 17-10. Following a Big Red kill, Hiram would reel off the final eight points to clinch the set and match, 25-11.

As a team, Hiram had 31 kills against just 13 errors, finishing the match with a .214 hitting mark.

The Terriers will be back at it on Saturday in the NCAC Tournament Semifinals at noon, against top seed and No. 5-ranked Wittenberg.
