Women's Soccer falls in overtime to Oberlin, 1-0

HIRAM, Ohio -- For the second consecutive match, the Hiram College women's soccer team came out on the short end of a overtime contest, falling 1-0 to Oberlin on Tuesday evening.

The Terriers are now 5-12-0 on the season and 1-6-0 in NCAC play, while the Yeowomen improve to 7-6-3, 2-3-2.

Oberlin was able to draw a foul in the box with 3:48 left in the first overtime session. Taylor French stepped up and blasted a penalty kick to the lower left and into the goal to give the Yeowomen the win.

The two teams battled through a scoreless first half, with Hiram holding a 6-3 edge in shots.

Both teams had opportunities to take the lead in the second half.

Junior Katelyn Mauch (Parma, Ohio/Normandy) fired a shot early in the half that was saved.

Later in the half, junior Emily Syrjala (Seattle, Wash./Seattle Prep) went unmarked on a corner kick. Junior Kaitlin Zemanski (Munroe Falls, Ohio/Stow-Munroe Falls) sent in the ball, but Syrjala was unable to control it.

Oberlin had two chances late. Josie Marshall fired a free kick in the 83rd minute that hit the crossbar and Taylor French rocketed a shot in the 87th minute that sophomore goalie Alina Mille (Medina, Ohio/Medina) was able to tip out of play to keep the game contest scoreless.

Glatt and Mauch each had two shots in the overtime session, but were unable to convert.

Senior Kailie Reed (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) made two saves in one half of action and overtime, while Mille had two saves.

Hiram had a 17-12 edge in shots and a 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.

The Terriers will close out the 2015 season on Saturday, with a road contest at Ohio Wesleyan that is slated to begin at 5 p.m.
