HIRAM, Ohio – September 1, 2026 - Hiram College Women's Soccer team fell to Bluffton University, 1-0, in its season opener Tuesday night at Charles A. Henry Field at Malmisur Stadium.
Head Coach Mike Shiels' starting lineup featured a strong mix of experienced upperclassmen with some younger players looking to make an impact early in their collegiate careers.
Momentum shifted back and forth early in the first half until Beaver midfielder Mya Vernon broke the deadlock off a corner kick in the 21st minute. Vernon was assisted by fellow junior Brysan Brewer.
From there on Bluffton kept possession on its plus side of the field for the majority of the match. That allowed them to outshoot the Terriers 15-7 for the game, however, Hiram edged them out with shots on goal with four to the Beaver's three. Bluffton kept up with its theme of ball control by doubling the Terrier's corner kicks with six.
Senior Reagan Mory paced the Terrier's with three shots on goal - all great looks to put the Terriers in the scoring column. Sydney Kates made her collegiate debut with two shots on goal. The Terriers also displayed their depth throughout the match, with 18 different student-athletes logging action.
Shiels and Co. will be back in action Thursday, September 3 at 4:00 pm as they host Alma College at Henry Field. It will mark the Terriers' first matchup with the Scots since 2019.
