Shiels enters his third season as head coach of the Terriers women’s soccer program in 2026 after joining the Hiram College Athletics staff in February 2024. He previously spent 21 seasons and won over 200 games as head coach of the women’s soccer program at Division II Notre Dame College, a historic collegiate coaching career in Northeast Ohio.
Shiels' second season with the team ended with a pair of all-conference selections in Becca Devericks and Bella Rose, who served key roles on the defensive side of the ball. Hiram picked up big conference wins over Thiel College and Bethany College during the season, as well as non-conference victories over Olivet, Carlow and Pitt-Bradford. The team also had the maximum four players named to the CSC Academic All-District Team at the conclusion of the season for their efforts on the field and in the classroom.
In his first season at the helm, the Terriers started the season with two hard-fought defeats against Muskingum University and The University of Olivet. The team followed up with a 4-1 victory over Bethany College, as sophomore Reagan Mory picked up a hat trick. Mory and fellow sophomore Bella Simmons led the Terriers on offense throughout the season, with Mory tallying three goals and four assists on the year, while Simmons had four goals and two assists. The team would go on to pick up wins over Thiel College and its first ever victory against Kenyon College later on in the season.
Since starting with the Notre Dame Falcons in 2003, Shiels accumulated a 204-131-37 overall record (.598 win pct) and 149-70-24 conference record (.663 win pct). He landed Mountain East Coach of the Year honors in 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2020, while earning the Ohio Coaches Soccer Association Division II Coach of the Year award in 2013.
Notre Dame College featured nine All-American and 36 All-Region selections under the direction of Shiels. He notably led the program to its most wins in a single season (16) in 2013 before advancing to the NCAA Division II Tournament in 2014, 2016 and 2017.
Shiels played collegiate soccer at Mercyhurst College, earning first team All-GLIAC honors and advancing to the NCAA Division II Final Four twice. He also played one season with the National University of Ireland-Galway and took part in the All-Ireland National Championships.
Shiels lives in Mentor, Ohio with his wife, Liz, and two children, Aidan and Maryn.
