HIRAM, OHIO  --  The Hiram College men's lacrosse team was defeated by the University of Mount Union, 21-3, in a non-conference game at Charles A. Henry Field.

Mount Union (2-3) scored the first goal of the game just under a minute into the first period to grab the early 1-0 lead.  The Purple Raiders went on to score four more goals in the quarter while holding Hiram (0-4) scoreless after the first 15 minutes for a 5-0 advantage.

The second half began with a goal by Hiram freshman Greg Summers (Lancaster, N.Y./St. Mary's) at the 14:04 minute mark to put the Terriers on the board and narrow the gap to 5-1.  But the Mount Union offense then took over scoring seven goals to go up by a score of 12-1 heading into halftime.

The Purple Raiders continued the offensive display in the third quarter with six goals to extend the margin to 18-1.  The Terriers rounded out the scoring in the period with a score by freshman Thomas Kuczma (Brunswick) just before the end of the quarter to make the score 18-2.

Hiram followed the Kuczma goal with another score just 20 seconds into the final period with Summers recording his second marker of the game to make it an 18-3 ballgame.  But the Terrier offense would not find the back of the net the rest of the way as Mount Union added three more goals en route to the 21-3 overall victory.

Offensively, Hiram recorded 25 shots in the game and was led in scoring by Summers and Kuczma who both ended the contest with two points.  Summers scored a pair of goals, while Kuczma added a goal scored and an assist.  Summers also led the team with eight ground balls.  Freshman Matt Pozderac (Mount Vernon/Centerburg) was second with seven ground balls.

In net, freshman Sawyer Lot (Sunbury/Big Walnut) started the game and played 44:36 minutes allowing 14 goals and making 13 saves.  Fellow freshman Mike Malloy (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) saw 15:24 of playing time giving up seven goals and stopping two shots.

Hiram will travel to Greencastle, Ind. on Saturday, Mar. 23 for a matchup against DePauw (Ind.) University in the North Coast Athletic Conference opener.  The game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
