Griffin Scores Career High in Women's Basketball Loss Against Westminster (Pa.)

Box Score

HIRAM, OHIO  --  Sophomore forward Christy Griffin (Middlefield/Cardinal) recorded her second straight game in which she scored a career-high in points, but the Hiram College women's basketball team fell to Westminster (Pa.) College, 64-63, in a non-conference game at Price Gymnasium.

Westminster (2-1) opened the game with five straight points and led throughout the majority of the first half.  The Titans recorded their largest lead of the game of 10 points on two occassions with the last one coming with 7:48 left in the period with the score 25-15.  Hiram (1-2) then went on a 12-1 scoring run to record its first lead of the game, 27-26, following a jumper by junior guard Kelsey Koskinen (Madison) at the 3:56 minute mark.  Westminster later regained the lead and had a four-point edge, 36-32, with 1:12 to play in the half.  But the Terriers rallied again and tied the game just before halftime on a pair of free-throws by Griffin, deadlocking the two teams at 37-37 at the intermission.

The second half featured four lead changes and five ties.  Hiram led by as many as five points twice in the final 20 minutes, including a 55-50 advantage with 5:53 to play on two more free-throws by Griffin.  This time, Westminster rallied to tie the game and the two teams battled to tie on the scoreboard for the eighth overall time in the game with just under two-and-a-half minutes to go with the score of 59-59.  The Titans took the lead on a three-pointer on its ensuing possession and the Terriers answered on a put-back by freshman Brianne Goodrich (Chesterland/West Geauga) off of her own miss and was fouled on the play.  But the free-throw missed its mark and Westminster would still lead by a point, 62-61, with 1:03 to go.  The two teams traded baskets, with Hiram's bucket coming from Griffin to cut the deficit back to a point, 64-63, with 46 seconds remaining.  But Griffin's jumper would be the final points scored by either team in the final seconds as the Terriers would have one final shot attempt to win the game, but the shot drew iron allowing the Titans to hold on for the one-point victory.

Westminster shot 35.5 percent (22-of-62) from the field and was led in scoring by Gabby Holko with a game-high 27 points on 11-of-18 shooting (61.1 percent).  One other player scored in double figures for the Titans in Rachel Durbin who finished with 12 points.

Hiram shot 35.5 percent (22-of-62) from the field and was led by Griffin's new career-high 21 points on eight-of-17 shooting (47.1 percent), including going five-of-six (83.3 percent) at the free-throw line.  She was also the team's leading rebounder with a game-tying high nine rebounds.  Freshman guard Jaclyn Fortner (Norton) also scored in double figures with 17 points.

Hiram will travel to Milwaukee, Wisc. for the two-day Paul F. Kneuppel Classic hosted by Wisconsin-Lutheran College on Friday-Saturday, Nov. 22-23.  The Terriers will take on Hope (Mich.) College on Friday with tip-off scheduled for 6 p.m.
