After three consecutive and competitive ties to start the year, Hiram men's soccer team captured its first win of the season in a road contest at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, 2-0, at Rathburn Family Field.
With the score deadlocked at 0-0 in the 79th minute, Hiram appeared headed for a fourth consecutive draw. Then Carmine Boscarello delivered the breakthrough. Boscarello scored his third goal in as many games to put the Terriers ahead for good, capitalizing on a perfectly placed goal kick from Derek Ufholz. Ufholz's punt traveled nearly the length of the field, finding Boscarello in stride. The forward then chipped in the goal to give Hiram the decisive lead.
Just four minutes later, in the 83rd minute, Reginal Johnson put a shot on target that initially appeared to be handled by the Panthers. The Panther goalkeeper got a hand to the attempt, but the ball was deflected off a defender and slowly trickled into the net, extending Hiram's lead.
The Terriers also controlled the stat sheet, holding advantages in several key categories. Hiram outshot Pitt-Bradford, 16-9, including an 8-3 edge in shots on goal. The Terriers also generated consistent pressure in the attacking, earning 11 corner kicks compared to just four for the Panthers.
Boscarello led the way with seven shots, with two of them on goal. Ufholz saved all three shots on goal that came his way.
The Terriers (1-0-3) return home for its conference opener against PAC foe Washington & Jefferson (0-2) on Wednesday, September 16. The game will kickoff at 4 pm from Henry Field. It will serve as the front half of a doubleheader with the women's soccer team.
