HIRAM, Ohio - April 22, 2026 – Hiram split a key conference doubleheader with an 18-win Grove City team, falling in a tight knit Game 1, 3-2, before controlling Game 2 for a 6-3 win on Wednesday evening at the College Softball Field.
The split puts Hiram and Grove City in a tie for fifth place in PAC standings. Hiram will play a doubleheader against Allegheny to close out the regular season of conference play. If Hiram were to drop to sixth place – it holds the tie breaker over the current sixth-place team, Saint Vincent College.
Game 1 Recap
Hiram out-hit the opposition (11-4) – but only one extra base hit was not enough to overcome the Wolverines' sixth inning comeback in a low-scoring start to the day.
Kayla Prigge got the offense going in the second inning with a single through the left side. Hiram singled two more times to load the bases but left three on base to end the inning.
Prigge had an exceptional game – going 4-for-4 with three singles and a double. The junior now has a team-high .358 batting average and 29 hits.
The Terriers' prime inning came in the fifth on a two-out rally that started with a Lola Thomas single. The heart of the order (Megan Moser, Prigge, Hannah Marlow) followed with three singles of their own to drive in two runs, taking a 2-1 lead.
Grove City showed the importance of extra-base hits, as it started the inning with two doubles and would go on to take a 3-2 lead, which would hold through the final out.
Yasmine Clark gave up just four hits in six innings pitched – allowing two earned runs.
Game 2 Recap
Hiram found the gaps in the Wolverines outfield in Game 2 with three extra-base hits – two of which resulted in runs scored. The Terriers scored at least one run in the first five innings of play.
Hannah Marlow began the scoring with an RBI single in the first. The bats stayed hot in the second as Hannah Schimmoeller doubled down the right-field line, followed by a Danielle Robles double to drive in a run.
Yet again in the third, a double by Daynna Mekaru put two runners in scoring position – Thomas knocked a ball in play to score a baserunner and increase the lead to 3-1.
Hiram took advantage of Wolverine errors in the fourth – scoring two runs off two errors. Schimmoeller capped the night off with her second RBI of the game with a single up the middle.
Avery Contini came up clutch in the circle for the Terriers late in the game. The Wolverines cut the score to 6-3 in the bottom of the seventh with the tying run at the plate - Contini retired the last two batters to end the game. She finished with a line of 7.0 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 3 ER.
