HIRAM, Ohio - March 21, 2026- The Hiram baseball team hosted the Thiel Tomcats on Saturday afternoon for a doubleheader, scheduling the first game at 1 p.m. and the second game at 4 p.m. The Terriers fought hard, earning a dominant victory in the first matchup, 9-1, but came up short in the second game 10-7.
The Terriers played hard in the doubleheader, with impressive individual performances -- both from the hitting and pitching -- helping them stay competitive in both games.Â
Game 1 Recap
The first game of the afternoon started out with the Hiram bats on fire, with six runs scored in the first two innings.
Tyler Fernandez started the rally in the first, when he blasted a shot into left field for a two-run homer to give the Terriers the early lead. The scoring in the first inning continued, when
Logan Gallentine smashed a gap shot into right-center field, scoring two runs, making the game 4-0 at the end of the first.
In the second inning,
Matthew Trimble hit a double, scoring one run and putting the Terriers into scoring position in that inning, where Fernandez scored on a wild pitch to make the score 6-0. The Terriers added on runs in the fourth and fifth innings to increase their lead, but the Terrier scoring would be capped off in the eighth, when Trimble singled in a run to make it a two-RBI day.
The pitching side of the first game was absolutely dominant, with
Nicolas Chernitsky throwing eight innings with four strikeouts, nine groundouts, nine flyouts, and 102 pitches thrown, only giving up one run in a very impressive performance.
Tyler Leasure finished off the game in the ninth, notching two strikeouts in a very impressive game on the mound for the Terriers.
Game 2 Recap
The second game of the day was very close, with the Terriers trying to mount a comeback attempt after falling behind early, but falling just short.
Hiram started off the scoring in the bottom of the fifth, when the Terriers grounded into back-to-back fielder's choices to score two runs, with Hiram also scoring on an error to cut the deficit to three. The Tomcats added another run in the top of the 6th, but the Terriers bats stayed hot into the bottom of the sixth, when
Logan Gallentine beat out the throw from the shortstop to score
John Bender, cutting the deficit back to three. The Terriers then loaded the bases, with
Ethan Ryan stepping up to the plate, and drawing a walk to score Gallentine. Fernandez then hit a sac fly, scoring
Max Alexander, and most importantly, putting Hiram down one run, 7-6.
The Tomcats would then respond with three straight runs, but not without a fight from the Terriers.
Luke Snider triedd to start a comeback attempt in the ninth, blasting a solo shot into left field for a home run, but Hiram's efforts came up short, with the final score of 10-7.
What's Next
The Terriers will be back in action on Tuesday, when they continue PAC play, this time facing off against the Gators of Allegheny College for a doubleheader, with first pitch set for 1 p.m.
