CLERMONT, Florida - March 9, 2026 – Hiram kicked off day two of The Spring Games tournament with a split, getting their first win of the season over Utica, 14-5, and finished the afternoon with a hard fought 3-1 loss to the No. 20 team in the country, CWRU.
Game 1 – Recap
The Terriers came into Tuesday's contests with confidence, playing well in all facets of the game to force a mercy rule in the sixth inning. The team's six runs in the final inning helped wrap things up, with
Hannah Marlow leading the charge on a three-run homer. Also contributing throughout the contest was
Danielle Robles,
Kayla Prigge and
Haven Papineau, all of whom tallied multiple hits. Marlow finished with a career-high five RBI, while leadoff hitter
Ari Torres helped set the table with four walks.
It wasn't just the bats that were rolling, as first-year
Avery Contini made her first career start (second appearance) and worked all six innings with three strikeouts and just one earned run charged to her ledger. Her final line was enough to carve out her first collegiate victory: 6 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 3 K.
Marlow's home run brought home
Lola Thomas and
Megan Moser to pushing the score to 11-5 in the top of the sixth. Hiram then was busy on the base paths the rest of the inning, scoring two runs on an error and then bringing the decisive run home on a wild pitch.
Game – 2 Recap
Despite the 3-1 loss, the Terriers kept CWRU at bay throughout the contest, with
Yasmine Clark holding the Spartans scoreless over her final four innings of work as part of a second complete game in as many days. The junior finished with another remarkable pitching line, with this effort coming against one of the best teams in the entire state of Ohio: 7 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 0 K.
Daynna Mekaru scored Hiram's lone run in the third inning, as she walked and eventually came around to score on an RBI single from Marlow. For the entire day, Marlow drove in over a third of Hiram's runs (six of 15 runs came via Marlow RBIs).
CWRU was able to win the game thanks to three runs between the second and third innings, although only one of those runs was earned.
