Terriers Strike First But Ultimately Fall To Grove City

Rogenthien Capitalizes On Free Kick In 17th Minute

HIRAM, Ohio – October 14, 2026 – Hiram College men's soccer battled first-place conference opponent Grove City College on Wednesday evening at Don Lyle Field, but the Terriers came up short in a 3-1 setback against the Wolverines.

Hiram's defensive unit set the tone early, standing firm as Grove City pressed forward and controlled possession in the attacking half. Anchored by Simon Schonfeld, the Terrier's backline delivered several timely challenges and key defensive stops to keep the Wolverines off the scoreboard through the opening minutes.

The Terriers soon turned their defensive abilities into an offensive breakthrough. In the 17th minute, Isaac Rogenthien capitalized on a free kick, finding the back of the net to put Hiram ahead 1-0 and give the away team an early advantage.

Hiram maintained its lead until the 34th minute, when Grove City found the equalizer to knot the game at 1-1. The Wolverines quickly seized the momentum, striking again on a free kick to take a 2-1 lead. The attempt curled into the upper-left corner of the net, putting Grove City in front before halftime.

Hiram goalkeeper Derek Ufholz kept the Terriers within striking distance with a clutch penalty-kick save, denying the Wolverines an opportunity to extend their advantage. However, Grove City capitalized briefly later, finding the net with a header to push its lead to 3-1.

The Terriers continued to compete down the stretch but were unable to mount a comeback as the Wolverines held their advantage through the final minutes.

Hiram finished with four shots on goal, with Rogenthien, Carmine Boscarello, Reginal Johnson, and Brayden Gambatese each registering a shot on target. Ufholz turned in a six-save performance in goal.

Despite the setback, Hiram will look to regroup and build on its defensive effort as conference play continues this Saturday when the Terriers travel to Latrobe, PA to take on Saint Vincent at 3 p.m.
