HIRAM, Ohio – March 4, 2025 – Hiram cruised its way back on track on Tuesday evening at Price Gymnasium, beating Saint Vincent in a rematch of the 2024 AMCC Championship: 25-23, 25-21, 25-17.
The victory comes after the Terriers lost to Thiel in their last conference match, giving the team a 5-1 record in conference play and firm control of second place in the PAC. The Tomcats are 5-0 in the PAC entering their match on Wednesday at Geneva.
Hiram was led by
Derek Chiang (12 kills) and
Jackson Deubner (10 kills), while
Connor Tilton recorded the most digs (17) in a three-set match in program history.
Matthew Albano had 34 assists and
Garrett Scheidegger had four total blocks in the win.
It was a match that boiled down to the later stages of both the first and second sets; Hiram turned a 23-23 tie to a 25-23 win in the first set, and later turned a 19-18 lead into a 25-21 win in the second set. Deubner delivered the decisive blow in that opening set before four of Hiram's last five points in the second set were also won on kills.
The clutch play in the first two sets opened the door to the team's best performance in the third set, when the Terriers had 17 kills and just five attack errors to finish with a hitting percentage of .333. Chiang had six of his 12 kills during that span, as Hiram flexed its muscles on its way to a clean finish to a competitive match.
While Hiram remains in second place, the victory provides a morale boost against an opponent that finished with a perfect 9-0 record in the AMCC last season. Hiram and Saint Vincent met in the conference championship last April, a match that ended in a three-set win and punched the Terriers' second trip to the NCAA Tournament.
Hiram will take nine days away from competition before returning to the court on Friday, March 14 for another home conference match against Chatham at 7 p.m. inside Price Gymnasium.
