Starting Pitching, Fernandez Fuel Hiram In DH Sweep Of Saint Vincent

Terriers Get Back To Winning Ways On Sunday

LATROBE, Pennsylvania - March 23, 2025 - Hiram got back on track on Sunday afternoon, winning both of its seven-inning games against Saint Vincent, 5-1 and 5-2, behind strong starting pitching and a big day at the plate from Tyler Fernandez.

The two wins improve the Terriers' record to 5-6 this season, with the team's home opener less than 48 hours away.

Game 1 Recap

Hiram didn't need much offense with the way Jack Conley pitched to start the day; the senior worked seven innings of one-run ball to earn his first complete game of the year. Saint Vincent got an RBI single in the fourth inning to make it a 3-1 Hiram lead, but Conley retired nine of his last 12 hitters to finish with a winning line of 7 IP, 6 H, 1 R/ER, 2 BB, 3 K.

The Terriers offense wasted no time in cracking the scoring column, as Chaisson Marrs and Hal Walker Jr. both reached base on singles before Fernandez knocked them both in on a two-run single of his own. Marrs later hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning to carve out a 3-0 lead.

While the Bearcats responded with a run in the fourth, Hiram closed out the contest in convincing fashion by scoring another pair of runs on a two-run shot off the bat of Fernandez. The junior tallied a season-high four RBI to fuel the dominant performance by Conley.

Game 2 Recap

Hiram followed a similar formula in Game 2, except sophomore Nicolas Chernitsky did the work on the mound and a pair of freshmen stepped up at the plate. Chernitsky surrendered just a two-run homer in the sixth, but otherwise limited the home team to just two extra-base hits to earn his second win of the spring – 6 IP, 6 H, 2 R/ER, 2 BB, 6 K.

Fernandez again pulled Hiram ahead in the first inning, lacing an RBI double to left-center field to plate Marrs. Fernandez finished the day with three hits and is now batting a team-high .513 this season.

Luke Snider and Nate Thomas, a freshmen tandem that got a chance to shine in starting roles, combined for four hits in the backend of the batting order to propel the Terriers the rest of the way. Snider notably plated two runs on a single in the third inning and another two runs would later come across to score to make it a 5-0 advantage.

Landin Wescott closed out the game and earned his first save of the campaign.

What's Next

Hiram will return to Fishel Field for its first home game of the season on Tuesday; Pitt-Greensburg will be in town for a 4 p.m. start time.
