HIRAM, Ohio – February 22, 2025 – Hiram men's lacrosse opened the 2025 season with an 8-3 loss to Washington & Jefferson at Henry Field, a game that featured a pair of future PAC rivals on a field that had been covered in snow for the previous week.
With the sun peaking through the clouds and the snow being cleared from the field, the two teams finally took the field on Saturday.
Hiram grabbed the early edge in the game thanks to senior
Bricen Jones, who scored each of the team's first two goals to give the home team a 2-0 lead through the first 15 minutes. Jones' first score came in the opening minute, when he picked up a ground ball off a
Tyler Wolke missed shot and laced it through the back of the net for a quick advantage. A few minutes later, Jones used an
Ethan Mayer pass to put his team ahead by two goals.
The Presidents adjusted on offense and scored the next eight goals in the game, three of which came on man-up opportunities. Zach Mey scored two of his team's first three goals before Dylan Batche scored three of the last four goals for Washington & Jefferson.
The Terriers found some momentum on a smooth offensive sequence midway through the fourth quarter, which culminated in a Wolke goal off a
Levi Willett pass. Hiram stepped up defensively and held the opposition scoreless over the last 9:54 of game time, but couldn't cut the margin any closer in a highly competitive game in front of the Henry Field crowd.
A quick turnaround is in store for Hiram, with the team getting two days off before returning to the field for a non-conference matchup with Alma on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Hiram, OH.
