PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania - February 19, 2025 - Hiram moved back to a winning record with a straight-set win over Chatham on Wednesday evening: 32-30, 25-23, 25-18.
The victory marks the Terriers' second over the Cougars this season, although this match marked the first designated conference match in the Presidents' Athletic Conference. Hiram has now won all six sets against the PAC opponent this season.
The match was closer than the final set score would indicate, with Hiram winning a marathon of a first set, 32-30. The road team saved three set points in the opening set, all of which came on kills: one by Jackson Deubner and two by Garrett Scheidegger. Derek Chiang later notched a kill and an attack error earned Hiram the 1-0 lead in the match.
The Terriers finished the first set with 22 kills and just six attack errors, paving way to a hitting percentage of .314. That mark was the best by either team in any set.
Hiram continued to get better as the match progressed, lowering its attack errors to four in the second set and three in the third set. Chatham got a team-high 16 kills from Benjamin Shelestak, but had fewer kills and more attack errors than the Terriers in each of the three sets.
Hiram was led by senior Derek Chiang, who posted a career-high 19 kills in his first season with the program. Matthew Albano set up his teammates with 42 assists, while Connor Tilton (11 digs) and Scheidegger (four blocks) had a quality night on the defensive end.
The Terriers will continue on in PAC play on Saturday, when they host the Bison of Bethany College at 1 p.m. inside Price Gymnasium in Hiram, OH.
