NCAC Championship Preview: Women's Swimming

Hiram Looking For Multiple New Personal Records This Week At Denison

2/12/2025 11:08:00 AM

HIRAM, Ohio - February 12, 2025 - The Hiram women's swim team finished the 2024-25 season with three quality dual wins and a lot to look forward to this week at the NCAC Championships in Granville, Ohio. The biggest wins of the season came against Bluffton University and Bethany College on Senior Day, with the five student-athletes on the team persevering and making the most of a rigorous schedule throughout the winter season.

The team has a bright future ahead, with Natalie Brown spearheading the group as the lone senior on the roster. Although the conference championship will be the toughest challenge this season, the guidance of a new coach and the support from seasoned veterans such as Brown and juniors Grace Basham and Becca Johnston makes the season's final challenge an exciting one.

Brown will make some noise in the distance events, while Basham will look to shine in the distance and individual medley events. Johnston is a sprinter and distance breastroker, sophomore Haven Papineau is a sprint freestyler and distance backstroker, and first-year Madison Fleischer is a pure sprinter for the women's team.

All of these women have played a role in this team's rise this season and have provided plenty of momentum heading into the conference championship.

Brown is ranked 27th in the NCAC in the one-mile swim, Basham places in the top-38 in the 400 individual medley and Papineau is ranked 52nd out of 81 swimmers in the 100 backstroke and 55th in the 500 freestyle out of 64 swimmers. Johnston currently is in the top-45 for the 200 breaststroke and Fleisher places 98th out of 150 swimmers in the 50 freestyle and 82nd in the 100 freestyle out of 122 swimmers.

"I want the women's team to go out and compete, as well as show the future of the program that everyone has improved across the board," head coach Matt Campbell said.

Campbell expects his student-athletes to break a number of personal records over the next few days.

"I want the team to focus more on achieving personal records," Campbell said.

This championship meet will be the toughest meet out of the entire season due to the fact that it is four days long, in which three of those four days have morning preliminaries and nighttime finals sessions. The Terriers look to improve and drop times across the board and finish out their season strong.
