HIRAM, Ohio - September 4, 2024 - A frenetic, back-and-forth battle between Hiram and Washington & Jefferson ended in a 2-1 loss on Wednesday evening at Henry Field.
The Terriers were active on both ends of the field, firing off 11 more shots (17 to 6) and four more shots on goal (six to two) than their opposition. The Presidents made the most of their opportunities, though, scoring on each of those two shots on goal to squeak out the victory.
The pace and intensity of the game was immediately felt, as both teams played fast while also limiting scoring opportunities. There were a combined 19 fouls and six yellow cards in the contest, a testament to the highly competitive nature of the game between future PAC opponents.
W&J scored both of its goals in the first half, as Logen Mackey and Antonio Romero each recorded their first collegiate goals to take a 2-0 lead into the intermission. From that point forward, Hiram didn't allow a shot on goal to give its offense a chance to take a bite out of the two-goal deficit.
Jimmy Zeilmann accomplished that feat in the 75th minute, firing a shot from 30 feet out to make it a 2-1 score. The Terriers fired off another pair of shots in the final 15 minutes and kept its defensive fire burning during that span, but the effort came up short in front of a supportive home crowd.
Hiram will next travel to Olivet, MI to take on the Olivet Comets on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
