HIRAM, Ohio – September 20, 2024 – Hiram started the Homecoming/Hall of Fame Weekend festivities with an early goal before Saint Vincent responded in a 1-1 tie on Friday night at Henry Field in Hiram, Ohio.
Erik Rangel Negrete scored his first collegiate goal off a deflection in the fifth minute and Tyler Jurgensen recorded all five of his saves in the second half to highlight the Terriers' stat lines. Jimmy Zeilman, Andrey Muñoz, Blake Kubasak and Chance McGinnis each had a shot on goal in a match that gradually grew more intense as it progressed.
Mattia Speretta delivered the game-tying strike in the 52nd minute, a goal that would prove to be the last of the offense between both teams.
Hiram came out playing with conviction, as Muñoz, Carmine Boscarello and eventually Negrete all fired off shots within the first five minutes. Negrete found himself in good position on the goal, scoring right after Boscarello's shot deflected off a Bearcats defender.
Defense held the upper hand for the remainder of the half, with both teams exchanging shots but neither finding the back of the net. Kubasak had a high-powered shot toward the middle of the net in the 28th minute, while Zeilmann nearly scored on a shot in the 40th minute.
The second half saw the two teams combined for six yellow cards, one of which resulted in a red card. The Terriers defense did its job during that span, limiting Saint Vincent to just the one goal despite facing 15 shots.
Despite playing one man down, Hiram held off the Bearcats for the final 10 minutes of the contest to secure the tie.
Hiram will take the rest of the weekend off before returning to the pitch on Wednesday. The team will visit Pittsburgh, PA and take on La Roche at 4 p.m. from the Baierl Athletic Complex.
