Hiram Clings To 1-0 Win, Earns 1st Victory Of 2024

Terriers Build More Momentum Following Tie At Geneva

HIRAM, Ohio – September 16, 2024 – The Hiram men's soccer team rode the momentum of a tie against the defending PAC Champions this past Saturday with a 1-0 win over Allegheny on Monday evening at Henry Field.

Carmine Boscarello delivered the game-winning goal in the 71st minute, as he evaded the Gators defense before delivering the ball to the left side of the net on a right-footed strike that proved to be the difference in the match. It marked the second goal of the season for Boscarello, which marks a new team-high.

It was a match that gradually gained steam, with the two teams combining for seven yellow cards and a red card, all of which came from the 44th minute to the end of the match. The two teams also adjusted from that point forward, combining for 16 shots in the second half after having just six shots in the first 45 minutes.

Boscarello and Jimmy Zeilmann made the biggest impact on the offensive end for the Terriers, with two shots on goal apiece. The duo each had a shot on goal within the first 13 minutes of the second half; Allegheny goalkeeper Cadan Bennett saved each attempt to keep it a 0-0 match.

Then Boscarello made his mark, breaking away from the opposition and finding just enough space to uncork a kick from outside the box. Bennett made a diving effort to his right side, but the Terriers had officially gained their first lead of the season.

Will McCale and the Hiram defense did the rest of the work, as McCale saved a low-lining shot in the 77th minute and another attempt in the 84th minute. The Gators couldn't find another shot on target during that span, lifting Hiram to its first win of the campaign.

The victory is the 13th in the all-time series matchup against Allegheny, with Hiram also winning the previous game between the two teams in 2021 (3-2).

Hiram will look to continue to protect its home turf on Friday, when it hosts Saint Vincent at 7 p.m. as part of Homecoming/Hollinger Hall of Fame Weekend in Hiram, Ohio.
