BEREA, Ohio - May 10, 2024 - Hiram's Sam Volpe and Trezure Bates both competed at the Harrison Dillard Twilight Meet over the last two days, a chance for both student-athletes to improve upon their respective events following the NCAC Championships.
Volpe began the week on Friday in the discus, placing 14th out of 27 student-athletes with a mark of 34.63m (113'7"). She then placed 21st in the shot put on Saturday (10.99m). The event adds another chapter to what has been a standout season for the first-year student-athlete, who posted a top-10 mark in the shot put at the NCAC Championships this past week (11.03m).
Bates had a record-setting day in the 100-meter hurdles, posting a new Hiram outdoor record of 15.41 to land in the top-10 for the preliminary races of the event. Although she fell just short of qualifying for the finals – which features multiple Division II student-athletes – she now stands alone atop the record books, passing the previous mark of 15.51 (Lynne Hutchison).
Both Volpe and Bates will continue to compete in the same events next week, when they travel to Alliance, OH for the Mount Union Last Chance meet on Thursday.
